Steve Marshall

Producer | Composer | Musician

Steve Marshall is a British producer, composer and musician whose career spans reggae, soul, funk, jazz, dance-theatre and film, with collaborations featuring some of the most influential names in contemporary music.

Most notably, Marshall produced three albums with legendary Jamaican artist and producer Lee “Scratch” Perry. Two of these, The End of an American Dream and Revelation, received Grammy nominations, while Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered features Perry’s most-streamed track, “Having A Party,” which has accumulated more than 18 million streams on Spotify.

His work with Perry led to collaborations with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and funk pioneer George Clinton. Marshall mixed Richards’ interpretation of Gregory Isaacs’ “Love Overdue” and produced the vinyl EP Scratch’d for Richards’ own Mindless Records label.

The Revelation sessions also resulted in the film The Revelation of Lee “Scratch” Perry and the track “Money Come, Money Go,” which later featured on Blue Ark Radio in Grand Theft Auto.

Marshall is currently working on his fourth Lee “Scratch” Perry album, scheduled for release in Autumn 2026, continuing a remarkable creative partnership and adding a new chapter to Perry’s enduring musical legacy.

As co-founder of the seminal East London arts and music project Pyramid Arts Development, Marshall performed, recorded and wrote with musicians from around the world. His collaborators included US drummer Clifford Jarvis (Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon), guitarist Alan Weekes (Art Blakey, Aswad, Janet Kay), drummer Kenrick Rowe (The Specials, P.J. Harvey, The Jazz Warriors), Jamaican saxophonist Michael “Bammi” Rose (Paul Simon, Jools Holland, Cymande), and Nigerian master drummers Sonny Akpan (The Funkees, Eddy Grant) and Jimmy Scott (The Beatles, Georgie Fame).

From Pyramid, Marshall went on to establish State of Emergency Limited with Deborah Baddoo, beginning a long and successful association with dance-theatre. His score for Desert Crossings received critical acclaim, with the production touring South Africa, Canada, Germany and the UK.

He has also composed and directed music for productions including Love and Sex, Choices and Consequences, Where Is Home?, Coleridge Unbound and, most recently, an interpretation of BAFTA/Guardian Prize-winning author Alex Wheatle’s novel Cane Warriors.

Marshall continues to explore new musical territory, with recent recording projects including collaborations with UK soul/R&B artist Geo Baddoo.

His music has also achieved successful sync placements with Supreme Clothing NYC, Bad Monkey, Absinthe Films and Grand Theft Auto. Recent creative visits to Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Osaka and Johannesburg have further expanded his international reach and reputation as an original and versatile artist.

As Bill Friskics-Warren of The Washington Post observed:

“The abundance of natural soul is undeniable.”
